Making the Switch from Toe Clips & Straps to SPD Pedals

I have been using Toe Clips and Straps on my pedals for a couple of years now but, I have decided to make a change to SPD pedals. img_1467The reason being is that 15% of my bike riding time comes at night and gravity makes the toe clip with the straps hang upside down when your foot is not inserted. I find it very difficult to flip the pedals over and re-insert my foot back into the toe clip and strap. So, after doing some reading I purchased the Shimano SPD PD-M424. img_1459I like the fact that I can clip in on both sides of this pedal and unlike toe clips and straps if you don’t get in right away, you can still ride for awhile. This pedal also has a wide cage that gives you a feeling of more support under your shoes.

img_1465To go with my new pedals you have to have new shoes. I purchased the Pearl Izumi Select Mountain Bike Shoes. I wear a size 9 US men and had I went by Pearl Izumi sizing chart I should have taken a size 43 Euro. In reality a size 44 Euro was a much better fit. This shoe has Synthetic leather and nylon mesh (not polyester) uppers are breathable and durable, 3 rip-and-stick closure straps which I wish were a bit longer, nylon liner (not polyester), compatible with most clipless pedal systems, and best of all this shoe is very comfortable!

A good video on how to install pedals.

Debbie to Run in the Boston Marathon?

img_1406I have not posted in a while because not much has been happening except for (work, work, work, and more work). Here are just a few tidbits.

Jacob came home last night and we are all glad to see him especially Joshua. Joshua gets depressed when Jacob is not home. Jacob is going to take him out to eat today. Joshua will get a big kick out of that.

For sometime now Debbie has mentioned that she wants to run the Boston Marathon. So, today we kicked off her official training with a 10 mile run. The run started early this morning along the D&L Trail (Freemansburg Ave.) all the way to Main St. downtown Bethlehem and back. At the half way point we took a break at our favorite Sunday hangout the Wired Cafe. I ordered a cup of coffee and a healthy croissant but Debbie and I must say I’m shocked ordered a blueberry cheese cake. So, after a brief stop at Wired we turned around and made our way home in good time. I had a great time following her on her first day.

A lot of stuff is coming up in the next three weeks and I will get it posted as fast as I can.

Luncheon at Misericordia University

img_1396crop

Diane, Debbie and I went to Misericordia University today for a luncheon and a tour of the campus and the new College of Health Science Building. Debbie is interested in Misericordia’s Occupational Therapy program. This was their 3rd time to visit the campus and a 1st for me. The reason for the luncheon was to recognize incoming students for their academic achievements. I had to laugh when we arrived at our table to find that the dessert was already on the table. How great is that? I thought it was a nice touch to have a faculty member from the  Occupational Therapy program seated at our table. We were able ask questions so we could learn more about the program. Everyone there was friendly and very informative and the campus is beautiful. Debbie loves it there and my wife and I feel that this is a good match but we are still trying to figure out how to make this work  financially.

Update (3/25/10): It’s official. Debbie is going to Misericordia University
